The ranch road leading to the white barns at dusk, with the Bitterroot Range behind

Plan your visit

The roadto Darby.

Chief Joseph Ranch is approximately 65 miles south of Missoula on Highway 93, in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley.

Getting here

Flights, cars and the gate.

Missoula is the closest airport. From there it is a scenic drive south through the valley.

Flying in

Missoula International Airport (MSO) is the closest airport to the ranch. It has been our experience that flights through Denver International Airport often have delays that can potentially bump a flight into Missoula to the next day.

There are direct flights from Salt Lake City International Airport and Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport that we use from different parts of the country that usually arrive on time. Our suggestion is that you attempt to book the earliest flight possible into Missoula with the fewest connections.

Rent a car

Yes, you will need a car. The ranch is approximately 65 miles south of Missoula on Highway 93.

Finding the ranch

If you are traveling south on Highway 93, Chief Joseph Ranch is approximately 65 miles south of Missoula. About one mile south of Darby, you will cross over Fern Creek. Make your first right (to the west) at our entrance. Our gates have a bronze sculpture of a hunter and a bison, and sit between two stone pillars. We are at mile marker 29.
